also thinking about this like gay sephardic poet from like the 13th century who wrote that moses would not have written down the laws against being gay if he had seen how beautiful his lovers face was and im like god the layers the romance the religious emotions..

the poet is rabbi yehuda al-harizi/judah ben solomon harizi! it’s from his book of taḥkemoni iirc, and the quote is “if Moses had seen the way my friend’s face blushes when he’s drunk, and his beautiful curls and wonderful hands, he would not have written in his Torah: do not lie with a man”

so I made a correction of the OP that made this poem popular on tumblr bc both the attribution and the translation were incorrect, I’ll repost it here:

This is the original poem, per my translation, goes as follows:

If the son of ‘Amram [Moses] had seen the face of my beloved, his ringlets, and his gloriously beautiful face blushing whilst imbibing alcohol, he would not have written in his Torah, “…and with a man*”
[*this is referring to the first line of Leviticus/Waiqrah 18:22, “ואת־זכר לא תשכב” or “and thou shalt not lie with a man”]

Whoever translated the poem got some stuff wrong. דודי (dody) means “my beloved” or “my lover” not “my friend” which would be ידידי (yedidi, which would be more likely to use in this context, and probably what the translator thought it was) or חברי (ḥaveri). The translator also mistranslated והוד יפיו which is like… “his majestic/splendid beauty” – “his wonderful hands” would be והוד ידיו. I added in “face”  because the next line talks about him blushing, so a face is implied.

@jewfrogs​ is right, it’s from the תחכמוני, but al-Ḥarizi alleges that he recorded this poem in Baghdad, suggesting it’s not originally his.
